The Market Theatre and Windybrow Theatre are pleased to present Tau, the winning play of the 2015 Zwakala Festival, for a limited season at the Market Theatre.

The play is set in the Free State where cultural norms and traditional practices still play an important  part in the community. Tau lives in a conflict of modern and traditional norms deeply rooted in African history and mythology. His father is a traditionalist and a community elder and his mother  a neo traditionalist with the ability to be swayed. Once confronted with this conflict, he embarks on a journey of discovering his manhood, himself and his Sesotho culture.

The story deals with sensitive cultural issues that have remained unchanged for centuries and are difficult to question. It also deals with the taboo issue of homosexuality in the midst of a sacred “manly” ceremony. The play does not wish to shun the cultural beliefs of its audiences, but wishes to ask people to look to themselves and whether they are abusing the power rooted in customs on the grounds of ignorance or as a calculated choice…LEROTHODI !!

Thabiso Rammala is a young rising star author from the Vaal, who wanted to write a play challenging stereotypes, exploring what women want and questioning whether culture protects one’s identity or whether one’s identity protects culture. Tau is a brave story of a boy for whom change and time are the only constant variables. Tau questions himself as he questions the world, trying to understand the world and his place in it. Finding and losing himself in his friends, family and village. How can you be like others when you are so different it scares you? What is it that really defines a man?

The Zwakala Festival showcases innovative indigenous productions and provides audiences with early introductions to the future pioneers of South African theatre. This Market Theatre Laboratory initiative gives young community theatre groups a prominent platform as well as professional guidance to develop their works.

Tau will run at The Barney Simon @The Market Theatre from 11 – 21 August 2016 for a special ticket price of R95.00 and an added student discount of R65.00.
